Valley of Fire State Park Valley of Fire State Park is located in Nevada, just west of Lake Mead. It covers an extensive exposure of sandstone that is in places, brilliantly red. In other places, the sandstone takes on the more recognizable tan color. In addition to the rock formations, the park is home to petroglyphs from Native Americans and offers some of the best scenery near Las Vegas. There's a loop rood that travels through the park, but there are multiple stops and there are hikes of various lengths from each of these stops. Even in late April it was already getting hot - when we were there it was about 80 degrees and felt a lot hotter in the sunshine. April probably is the best time to go - while we were there many of the desert plants were blooming and it wasn't too hot to go on all of the hikes.
