Newport, Rhode Island We took a quick daytrip to Newport, RI when we couldn't decide where else to go. Neither of us had been there and we wanted to see what all the fuss was about the mansions and the cliff-walk. We didn't realize Quonset Point was having its airshow (hence the traffic jam on Route 4) and that there was an international polo contest (hence the traffic jam in Portsmouth on the way home), but it was a lot of fun, we got to give ourselves an idea of what's there and we had a really good time taking the tour of Fort Adams, which is where most of the photos are from. We also managed to get quite the tan - getting ourselves ready for our Vegas trip in August. But if you've got some time to kill - Fort Adams is well worth it. For $6 a person, you get an hour long tour of the semi-restored fort. You go from looking at Officers' Quarters, to the cannons, down into the listening tunnels that they had built to identify any enemies trying to dig tunnels through the fort. That part of the tour though, might not be so good for claustrophobics - it's about 3 feet wide and 5 feet high - you have to crunch down to make it through with your flashlights.
The traffic jam from the Quonset Point airshow (like we'd know that was the same day we wanted to go to Newport!) Last Updated on June 20, 2004 - webmaster@jeffandmoe.net
