Esopus Spring 2005 Flood

There was a good-sized flood in the Esopus River valley in March of 2005.  It flooded throughout the Catskills, but this valley was one of the hardest hit.  The town of Phoenicia was underwater in places and several bridges were overtopped by the river and damaged to the point that the have had to be closed to traffic.

Bridge Street is closed because the water overtopped and damaged the bridge.

The river actually peeled the pavement off of the bridge

The closed bridge - you can see how much pavement was lost from the flood waters

The railroad museum was completely flooded - it was washed out around the building and several of the train cars were washed off the tracks.

The washout near Bridge Street and just above the railway musuem

The river was up in these trees and washed these barns around

Silt plowed off the Woodland Valley road

This bridge, off of the Woodland Valley Road was also washed over - this one didn't suffer any structural damage.

Looking at the river channel

You can see how the river has widened and deepened
