Geology Field Trip to the
American Southwest
March/April 1997
Jeff's love of the Southwest started with a
weeklong Geology Field trip that he and the other students at Lyndon in the
Geology program put together. So for spring break, instead of the beaches
of Cancun, Jeff, along with 3 other students and their geology professor, headed
to Nevada, Utah and Arizona for an 8 day odyssey throughout the southwest.
We explored the desert around Las
Vegas and checked out a
thrust
fault in the Spring Mountains, then took a look at an anticline in Quail
Creek - took in the wonders of Zion National Park, tried to get to Bryce Canyon
and finally ended up at the Grand Canyon before returning to Vegas for our
flight back to Vermont.
We started just outside of Vegas, taking a look at Frenchman Mountain. Here's Jeff with Vegas in the background. Then we moved on to the Spring Mountains just outside of Las Vegas Then on to Snow Canyon in Utah to look at Cinder Cones We had a chance to check out some cool things around Quail Creek. We're on the edge of a syncline here. Stayed a few nights at Quail Creek State Park After we left Quail Creek, we explored cinder cones around the St. George, Utah area in Snow Creek Canyon Then explored the Virgin River Canyon Jeff at the Virgin River outlook Looking at the roadcuts in the Virgin River Canyon We hiked up to Angel's Landing in Zion - and explored some of the caves eroded into the rocks Then we spent the night at Zion and planned on going to Brice Canyon the next day... And we woke up to some newly fallen snow... But you can see from this picture, it probably wasn't a good idea to get to Brice, since it was snowed in. So we decided to head down to the Grand Canyon instead - here's a group photo And we did some fossil digging in Coal Creek Canyon (near Tuba City) Though there was still snow when we got to the Grand Canyon too - even more at Desert View, which looked like a winter wonderland and there was no hint of the canyon beyond... Once we got to the Grand Canyon - we hiked down to the Colorado and back up in a single day. Here's Jeff ready to go down. The day after the hike down and back, we awoke to about 8 inches of snow. Here's Jeff on the Canyon Rim just outside of Grand Canyon Village. And as you can see, the snow was everywhere.
