Life at LSC past the photos in the brochure...

One might wonder what you can do at a small college in northeastern Vermont?
Well sometimes the answer is not a hell of a lot if you don't have an imagination.

If you like the outdoors, this is a nice place to live. There are lots of places to go hiking, camping, mountain biking and all other kinds of outdoor activities. Once the snow starts to fly, there are a lot of winter activities too. I believe the Northeast Kingdom has one of the largest networks of snowmobile trail systems. There are several ski areas within driving distance and Burke Mountain Ski Resort (which might be closing this year) is only a few minutes from school.

If you don't like the outdoors, then there's not that much opportunity to do things. Montreal and Quebec City are within about 2 ½ hours driving time, Boston - 3 ½, New York - 6, Albany, NY - 4 ½ and Burlington, the largest city in Vermont is about an hour and a half from Lyndon State College.  You can always go to North Conway, New Hampshire's outlet village in the southern White Mountains.  North Conway is about two and a half hours away.

Life on campus is fairly dull, other than being able to ingest large quantities of alcohol on thirsty Thursday or going out for car rides to do other things, there's not a whole lot to do. LSC does have a campus activities board which tries to do activities for students and the Residential Life department once again tries to do things for students, but all in all, there's not that much to do on the camp proper.  However, CAB has been working a lot harder recently to get more entertainment onto the campus.  My sources tell me it is a little better than when I was still there.

The other big problem with LSC is the fact that the sun never shines - there are periods of several weeks where the sun will never be seen.  LSC is located in the Northeast Kingdom which is the second cloudiest place in the US next to Pacific Northwest.  Seasonal depression is a big thing here, without the sun everyone gets cranky and depressed.  After coming here and never experiencing life without the sun for long periods of time, some people just can't take it - our retention rate is low and many people leave before the first semester is even through with.  For those who stay, Health Services dispenses prescriptions of Prozac and other anti-depressants fairly often.

Of course we have always found plenty of strange and interesting things to do on and around campus.  Bring a Ouija board with you and visit the theater, or to anywhere else on the campus and it will do all kinds of things!  Ask some upperclassman about Emma and about weird things that happen on the campus.

Enough with the stories, here are some pictures of life at LSC.

A picture from the smoking lounge in the Alexander Twilight Theater Lobby. This is the place to smoke for all smokers who are in the know or when it's so cold outside your fingers will fall off before you finish a cigarette. This place is a welcoming sight to anyone who's sat through a crappy class or just been in the most boring meeting. Come one, come all - have a smoky treat and maybe Emma, our resident ghost will pay you a visit.

One of the dorm rooms on campus. This room is in the Stonehenge complex of residence halls on campus. Notice the mess, no one has the energy to clean when there hasn't been any sun for a month! The stonehenge rooms are fairly spacious, but the rooms in the Wheelock residence hall can be considered prison cells, cement block walls and metal doors. It's enough to drive anyone insane.

One of the kitchen areas in the Suites in Stonehenge. These are a saving grace when the Dining Hall is serving crap for a meal, which is most of the time. Bring some pots and pans with you so you can cook something that can taste a lot better than the dining hall. Better get used to macaroni and cheese and Ramen Noodles fast!  Look at Jeff when he had a beard - scary huh?

Look what no sunshine and 6 feet of snow before Christmas will do to you here at LSC. Having fun is something you just have to do here otherwise you're going to go crazy. It's better to be funny and laughing than sitting in your room wondering why there hasn't been any sun.
