03/15/2005: "how would you like that payout?"
A few observations after visiting Foxwoods for the first time in ages…
• There’s a significant difference between Foxwoods and Mohegan and not in a good way for Foxwoods. • The hordes of unwashed, dirty, poorly dressed people do nothing for Foxwoods image. • The HVAC system needs to be ripped out and reinstalled because it shouldn’t look like there’s a fog bank in a room because of cigarette smoke. • Foxwoods needs to wash things – everything is dusty there. • The difference between clienteles at Foxwoods and Mohegan is amazing – apparently all the attractive people go to Mohegan because there weren’t any at Foxwoods last night.
Yes, I made it down yesterday with Moe and Sharon and got to be the odd man out in just about every conversation – since as you’d expect with a company outing, everyone was talking shop and I was the only one not intimately involved (well I don’t consider Moe telling me about stuff all the time very involved) in the company. Most of the time I shook my head and smiled, it was the safest way to go about stuff.
While I realize I still have a problem with gambling (mostly that once I start, I won’t stop until I’ve run out of money if someone lets me), the entire idea of gambling is becoming less and less of a draw for me. I was semi-excited going down thinking of getting a chance to play, but once I started playing it was all automatic and I wasn’t enjoying myself. Add all the cigarette smoke that was almost thick enough to make my eyes burn, and the entire gambling experience is just becoming less and less attractive.
I think it’s got a lot to do with no longer smoking. Smoking went hand-in-hand with gambling and now that I’m not smoking, I go and it’s just not the same. Not that I want to smoke while I’m there, it’s just that the experience I used to crave (smoking, gambling and just sitting back and enjoying myself) isn’t the same anymore and I don’t like it.
The trip also reminded me why I don’t eat at places like Planet Hollywood or the Hard Rock Café. We ate dinner at the Hard Rock Café and while the food wasn’t bad, the service was horrible and the meals were barely even worth describing. I get better food checking out the local restaurant at home. I feel bad for people who travel all over and they end up going to the Hard Rock or Planet Hollywood – it’s such bland and generic food that no one should think its good just because there’s a lot of junk on the walls.
On the way home I just put the headphones on and slept since it was even more shop talk and I knew 5 would come around awfully early this morning. Moe and I got home sometime just after midnight – so by the time I got ready and stuff, I wasn’t in bed and starting to sleep until almost 1 in the morning. The alarm clock almost got hit with a hammer this morning and I had to argue with myself against just going back to sleep and ignoring work.
On the work front, my boss is leaving and I’m considering putting in my resume. I am basically qualified for the position and I’ve discovered that Annoying Coworker is going to apply. That alone is enough to get me to send in a resume. However it would be a bit more in pay, a more important sounding title and a bit more to do – so it wouldn’t be that bad. We’ll see what happens.
And like I could forget, today Moe and I celebrate our 8-year anniversary.
