03/09/2005: "you're on her head..."

Some people just make me wonder how oblivious people can be. This morning I was on the T sitting in a single seat with a woman sitting in a single seat in front of me, so between us was the back of her seat. Now it’s completely normal for someone to stand in the isle and hold on to the top of the seat between us – as a matter of fact there’s a handle for just that.

It wasn’t someone holding onto the handle though that bothered me. This guy got on the train and proceeded to walk over like he was going to stand and hold onto the handle, but then turned around and sat/leaned on the back of the seat between us. Because the woman was sitting in the seat, she had more impact than I did – but on one side he was crushing up against my knees and on the other side he was literally sitting/leaning on this woman’s shoulder and back. That and his carry-on bag swung around and hit this woman in the head.

He never even acknowledged her presence through all of this.

So she start’s going “excuse me, excuse me” and the guy is just oblivious and even though I could hear her, he pretended not to hear her – I’m not sure if he was playing his Asian card or if he didn’t understand English, but either way it was clear that he was on top of both of us. The only thing he did was to shift his bag so it wouldn’t hit her head. He was still sitting/leaning so that he was on top of her and against my legs.

I shifted so my knees would push him – but it didn’t do anything – he continued to stand there.

After about 5 minutes the woman was finally like “EXCUSE ME, YOU’RE ON TOP OF ME.” He looked and finally stood up and moved away from our seats. But then as the ride continued, he moved closer and closer until at the point where the woman was getting off to get off at a station, he sat down in the chair before she had even completely gotten out of it.

Whatever…I made sure my bag swung around and hit him in the back when I got up out of my seat.

The snowstorm last night, while intense didn’t really amount to much – I think we had about 5 or 6 inches of snow at the house. It blew around a lot so it’s hard to tell. I have to laugh though, people are literally reduced to tears at this point over the continuing snow storms. Hello – you live in New England, it can snow right through at least April.

I have to remind my self not to stand at the doors of the subway when they open - when I am on the inside. Because if the doors open and someone insists on trying to get into the door, instead of stepping aside so that I can get out, I become rather unrational and knock them right over. So I make an effort to make sure someone else is the first one out.

I would just like to say - you did exactly what I would have done. I salute you fellow bag swinger.

I'm also not afraid to throw an elbow or two - early and often - during the commute.

I am SO glad I don't have occasion to ride public transport anymore.
