02/08/2005: "shut up!"
Apparently the annoying people are out in force trying to make my commute crazy. It started last night with the lady with too much perfume and who hummed. When she first sat down all I could think of was that I couldn’t breath. The smell of baby powder/perfume was so strong that I thought for a moment, all the oxygen had left the T. Then I looked around and everyone else had their hand up to their nose because of the strength of the smell. If that wasn’t enough – as soon as this woman sat down she hummed loudly and went on with her own little concert. She was humming so loud that I could hear her over the clanging and regular noise of the T. The woman standing on the other side of her (I was sitting behind this annoying woman) looked at here with this look of disbelief and I had the same look on the other side. She finally got off and I could both relax without hearing the humming and breath again.
Then almost as soon as she left, this frumpy Chinese woman pulls her cell phone out of her purse and starts talking in Chinese on the phone. At first it wasn’t too loud – your typical annoying cell phone conversation on the T – but as she went on, she literally started yelling in Chinese, to the point that everyone stopped what they were doing and looked at this woman – who looked at everyone looking at her – and continued to yell. At one point I looked across the train at this woman sitting near her who was obviously like “shut the fuck up you stupid bitch” and I smiled at her because she knew I was staring at the Chinese cell phone woman and we both just laughed and the Chinese woman got this pissed off look on her face and continued to scream. When she got off at Newton Center, the stupid woman was still screaming on her cell phone.
Then this morning this person comes up and stands next to where I was sitting. Now this is perfectly normal on a busy train and since it’s the Patriots’ parade day – it’s going to be busy. However they proceeded to stand there and cough almost continuously while barely covering their mouth. While I couldn’t feel anything hitting me, I am sure it did. I took me zipping my coat up, pulling my collar up and turning and looking at her with this look of pure disgust before she turned away and moved away from me to continue spreading her germs elsewhere.
Going to try to sneak out and see the parade today – it goes by near my building so it’s not much of a stretch. I told the new girl I’d take her – since she’s still a Boston neophyte and wants to see everything. That gives me a reason to get out of here for a half an hour or so.
Looks like I’ll be heading to Ikea in New Haven with Brendan this weekend – oh yeah…cheap euro furniture here I come! It’ll be a fun road-trip. I’m picturing several boxes on the racks of my car.
