01/25/2005: "what else do you expect of the T?"
It seems another snowstorm is approaching the Boston area. They are calling for another 4 to 6 inches of snow in the area tomorrow. Good thing I pushed out a lot of the snow on the driveway yesterday so now at least I’ve got a place to put the new snow.
I know I’ve bitched about this before, but as someone who has to look at environmental notifications I cannot believe that these high-priced consultants who prepare the documents can make so blatant mistakes. This morning I was reviewing a fairly well put-together document but when I got to the location, the latitude and longitude were reversed, as were the UTM coordinates. I’m sorry, but if you’re at all familiar with the coordinate systems, it’s something you should be able to pick up on. There’s no chance we’re at 71 degrees north and 42 degrees west.
I know, petty complaining, but as an underpaid state worker I can figure that out and consultants pulling down 6 figures can’t…I’m so in the wrong end of this equation.
I’m going to try to get out this weekend and get some cross-country skiing in. I figure we’ve got the snow here – I might as well start exploring some of the state forests in the area for their skiing potential.
The T ran as would be expected soon after a blizzard – poorly. Traffic wasn’t much better getting to the train station. The roads were okay – nothing all that bad – yet I don’t think I got about 35 the whole way in and then the train we were on while it didn’t break down, was stuck behind at least 2 disabled trains, so the ride that normally takes 35 to 40 minutes lasted for over an hour.
Just typical weather-related T difficulties I suppose. I must be becoming a true Boston commuter since my bitterness over T failings is starting to fade. Now I just shrug my shoulders and I’m like “well, it is the T, what do you expect.”
Moe and I have yet to decide on a late winter/spring short vacation. I was leaning towards Vegas because of free rooms, but we’re planning on going in the late fall with a bunch of friends, so I’m not sure I want to go twice in a single year (plus Moe will be out in the early summer for a business convention). I had thought about a ski trip out west until I priced it out – I practically choked. I didn’t think 4 days of skiing at Whistler would run me close to $1200 each when you factor in airfare, hotel, lift tickets and a car.
So the possible vacation planning continues…any suggestions for a quick, easy (and fairly inexpensive) trip idea for the early spring? I’m leaning towards hiking in the desert southwest at this point – but even that might be tough with all the snow they’ve been getting out there.
