01/16/2005: "The social commentary of Harry Potter..."
I've spent the better part of the afternoon trying to put up that plastic wrap crap on the windows in the house with obvious gaps and leaks (since I can sit there and feel the breeze next to the window!). Okay - not too difficult you say - consider that the tape never stays put, the plastic seems to enjoy bunching up and sticking to the tape, and consider I'm trying to do this without any assistance and you might understand why it's such a pain.

Moe's off at Foxwoods with his Mom playing bingo. While I have no desire to play bingo, the events of last week have driven me very close to going to a casino and help myself maintain my high roller status at Mohegan. However, I've been strong - and I haven't gone - though knowing he's down there isn't making that feeling go away.
Tomorrow's a holiday for me - not sure what is happening yet. I'll probably still be putting up this stupid plastic stuff on the windows - or it it will have encased and suffocated me or something equally disturbing.
The rest of the time I've been immersed in this book I got - The Plot Thickens...Harry Potter Investigated and I've got to say that I'm amazed that people have spent this much time thinking about the world of Harry Potter. It's a series of essays and articles on various dimensions of the series and the Harry Potter universe. For one, it showed me that there are far bigger geeks in the world, ones who almost come up with scientific papers on Harry Potter. On the other hand it really is interesting - and gives you an insight into the series you might not catch on your own.

For one, it made me realize what a social message the series is sending out. Prejudice and bigotry only lead to evil. It's love and the acceptance and celebration of difference that brings out the true good. Makes you wish there's a queer wizard running around Hogwarts...
