01/07/2005: "if you got caught, you're most likely guilty folks"
I saw the most disturbing billboard on the way home last night. I skipped going home the Pike so I was traveling through Holliston in a direction I don’t normally go when there was this big billboard with a big picture of this guy on it with the title “DUI Lawyer.” In smaller text along the bottom it read “When being guilty isn’t an option.”
This disturbs me in many ways – but most of all because if you have been charged with an OUI/DUI crime, it’s most likely that there is fairly hard evidence (be it a breathalyzer test or a sobriety test) that you were drunk or otherwise impaired while you were driving. What exactly is this lawyer going to do to get you out of it?
Another fact is that it is in such a well-to-do and affluent community. It’s basically implying for people there that it’s okay to drive under the influence, if you have enough money, a shyster lawyer will be able to get you out of the charge.
I don’t care if people drink (as I know lots of people in this state do – I just don’t drink that much personally), but I don’t care what your excuse is – there’s absolutely no reason to get into a car after you’ve been drinking. I don’t care if you kill yourself, but when you get into that car – you put everyone else on the road in jeopardy.
I wish I cold remember the lawyer’s name – I’d like to send him a letter complaining about the billboard – but I’m sure it wouldn’t mean anything to him It’s just sad that there’s something like there out in the world and people who think that it’s okay to drive while impaired because “they’ll get out of it.”
The weekend plans are up in the air mostly because I don’t even know when Moe is working this weekend. All I know is tomorrow morning I plan on sleeping in for a change – this 5-day work week thing is a killer after a week of vacation.

I can understand making a mistake and trying your best to defend yourself, but it was just the brazen ad that was up there that really bothered me. There weren't any bones about it - just call me, put me on retainer, and I can take care of your DUI charge. It was more the lawyer's attitude than anything else.

I agree in general BUT - mistakes happen. What happens when someone gets pulled over can vary tremendously, and I know one person who got the book thrown at him while people who were repeat offenders got less punishment. I'm not defending his stupidity in driving drunk AT ALL, but punishment should be meted out fairly - and everyone has the right to defend themselves against a criminal charge.

WOW - that is a pretty offensive billboard. I just don't get it.
And I keep seeing so much on the news lately about people with pages-long driving offenses who still have their licenses?
I'm all for more stict laws.
